Mr. Nick Dunkerley
Creative Director, Founder
With a background in sound engineering and radio journalism at DR (Danish National Broadcasting Corporation), Nick has more than 15 years experience in public radio broadcasting.
Before founding Hindenburg Systems, he worked as a consultant for community radio stations in Zambia.
It was while working on a radio project there that he made the initial sketches for an audio editor. “I just need something simple that can be used by any storyteller ….. “
Mr. Martin Swanholm
Martin is an experienced information architect and software developer with a background in physics and computer science.
Martin first started playing around with digital audio editing 25 years ago and has been passionate about the field ever since.

- to tear down the technical divide between storytellers and their audience.
Every day 4 billion radio sets are turned on and tuned in.
Stories are spread through the airwaves from Alaska to Antarctica.
From cities to rural areas. Radio gives voice to street children in Tanzania, indigenous journalists in Nepal and war correspondents covering the darkest corners of our world.
Radio touches our hearts.
The stories we hear change our perspective.
Radio can strengthen communities and build nations.
But despite radio being the most widespread media on the planet, there can still be a long way from storytellers to their audience.
Our mission is to close that gap….
"Why choose the name Hindenburg for your software?" is the one question we are almost always asked. Often it os followed by a number of 'crash and burn' jokes.
In order to answer, we need some historical context:
In 1937, Chicago reporter Herbert Morrison witnessed The Hindenburg Disaster. A German passenger airship, the LZ 129 Hindenburg, caught fire and crashed while attempting to dock at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. Covering the tragic accident, Mr. Morrison created radio history as he gave the world’s first eyewitness news report.
His professional response and accurate descriptions combined with very emotional response to this unexpected disaster have made the recordings a seminal moment in audio history.
The Hindenburg Disaster was a tragedy, but it marked the birth of mobile reporting and expanded the possibilities for global communication.
At Hindenburg we are dedicated to supporting the production of great radio stories, and this is why we pay homage to the Hindenburg Disaster.
Hindenburg Systems was born 2008. In Lusaka, Zambia.
It was a warm evening and pitch dark. Lusaka was quiet except for a few dogs barking in the distance. There was a blackout. The power was off as it so often was at dinner time. All the cookers in town had switched on at once, overpowering the powerplant. This happened most nights.
On a porch in a garden where the two founders of Hindenburg systems. They sat sitting starring into the dark.
“Fancy a drink?” Nick asked.
“Mmmm,” Preben said.
The power would come back on at some point but right now there was not much else to do than sit and talk. So they did. And one of the things that came up was audio editing software.
This was something they both where familiar with. Nick had a background in audio engineering and Preben in software development and stage sound. Together they had played in a band. Music had developed their friendship. Work had never really come up.
“I’m working on a community radio project,” said Nick sipping his drink. “And I have a problem.”
“Mmmm,” said Preben.
The problem Nick had was, that he could not find a audio editor that suited the project.
“It needs to be simple, reliable and affordable … and designed for radio,” he said.
Radio journalists and rural reporters should be able to use the software. Some of the users might not even be able to read or write. Nick had been looking at all the software he knew and had used in the past. He had disqualified them all. So he asked Preben if he knew of any software that might work for the project.
“It sounds like you have tried them all,” he said.
The both sat and stared into the garden for a while. Night sounds filled the air. Nick broke the silence.
“You know a thing or two about programming, right?”
“mmm, “ Preben answered reluctantly. Maybe anticipating what would come next.
The rest - as they say - is history...
